My New Professional Dress Form

Last month I was contacted by a representative from The Shop Company to see if I was interested in trying out and sharing my experience from one of their dress forms. I was excited at the opportunity and said yes of course. Imagine my surprise when they weren’t just offering a base model for me to try out but one of the ones from their top of the line professional line!  Since I already have a budget friendly adjustable womens dress form, and I design a lot of childrens patterns, I chose a childrens model.

My first impression of The Shop Company was that they have great customer service. My order was put in and shipped out promptly. It arrived while we were on vacation unfortunately so I had to wait to check it out!

When I got it I was shocked at the weight of the box, when I opened it up I was beyond pleased to see that it was heavy because it had a solid cast iron base, it was my first peek at the sheer quality of the professional line. My womens singer dress form has a plastic base that weights nothing and topples over very easily. The more pieces I pulled out of the box the more quality I found. The dress form it self is firm but still partially pinnable. The fabric is soft but durable and it has princess seams and center seams on the body as well as the natural waist marked with twill tape. This is extremely helpful and important for tailors and designers as it helps getting a proper fit and cut of garments.

Once I got all the pieces out of the box it was time to pulled out it was time to put it together. The directions were a simple 1 page print out with some smaller pictures and some text. It went together easily and quickly. The only confusing part was the spring, for the child form it just seems to sit there and no nothing except rattle, the when adjusted all the way down the form’s bar isn’t low enough to even touch the spring.  So I took a few minutes to take it back apart and removed the spring and I have been beyond thrilled since.  You can adjust the height but honestly it’s tall enough at it’s lowest height I will likely never adjust it.  Also the skirt cage on the bottom is removable if you don’t want it on, though honestly it’s another thing I will likely never adjust.

I had hoped to get this review out sooner, but I didn’t have time to really test it out and I didn’t want to review or recommend something I hadn’t gotten a chance to fully USE.  I ordered the size 64 which is the size of an average 7 year old or US size 7.  The first thing I did was measure the form and compare it to the ASTM measurements I use for designing my patterns, I was very pleased to see it was right in line with the measurements which are as close to ‘standard’ as it gets.  The next thing I did was pull out a bunch of size 7 clothes we have to see how they fit.  Once I was satisfied that the form was right on size I was excited to get started!

Part of what has kept me so busy this week (well besides 5 crazy kids) is the new pattern I have been getting ready for the Boys Bundle UP.  I actually used the professional form while drafting and testing the pattern!  My kids are thin, always have been and always will be, plus they go to bed at 8:30-9pm which doesn’t help when I sew at 10pm or later most of the time.  It was nice to be able to try pieces on as I was going to make sure the lining fit before cutting out the shell,  I was also able to see what was to short, what was too long, where needed more ease and where needed less.  

First off what can I say, it’s beautiful and I simply love just seeing it in my sewing room every morning.  But what I was even more excited about was testing it out on a fitted bodice!  Yes I know the flannel is not straight in these photos but that is okay, this was just a muslin tester I through together for a client whom I was helping with the fit of her pattern.

I was able to pin the bodice to the dress for to see where it sits on the neck, shoulders, waist and arm openings as well as how much ease there is.  For a woven garment you need ease or you won’t be able to move ;).  but this shows me what it will look like pulled against the body and I can see how much extra fabric is on the sides.  This pattern uses a 3/8″ seam allowance and like most woven bodices should have 2 inches of ease.  Since this is half the bodice that means the front of the bodice should have 1″ ease which is 1/2″ on each side.  This lets me know I should have about 7/8″ of extra fabric on each side.  I can then pin it in place so that there is only 3/8″ extra on each side and can see how it sits with the ease.

I think what I love the most, is sewing patterns are in 2D.  They are giving you a flat piece of material to mold and shape into your garment, using a dress form allows you to see how those straight and curved lines look on a real body.

I can’t express enough how in love I am with this dress form! And no, it’s not only because I was given one to try out, I actually plan on ordering a womens one for myself soon and I highly recommend them for those who design, tailor or sell garments online.  I have had it for 2.5 weeks now and my kids haven’t managed to knock it over yet!  If there were 2 things I wish it had is I wish it was fully pinnable, though I am guessing there is a good reason it’s not, and I wish they had one with removable magnetic shoulders. I have always been clear that I feel about the fact that it is worth paying more for quality, and that applies to this.  That being said I am also down to earth and no and understand that not everyone can afford a professional version, or maybe doesn’t need one.  Don’t worry they have a whole line of classic dress forms and mannequins!

Wow what a year it has been!  I can’t believe that in just a few days it will be the 1 year anniversary of my new pattern making adventure!  Over the last few months we have been working on getting everything moved over and integrated into the new site www.eymm.com/blog.  Because there are SO many links to this original blog we haven’t had time to properly move it over to the new site without breaking all those links.  So instead I have decided to leave this blog here for now though I will not be adding new blog posts to it and would instead use the new blog.

When one of my fellow blogger and designers told me about this tour idea I jumped right on board!  One complaint we get at times is that the directions are too detailed (yes, we get that often).  Everyone is at a different level, those that are intermediate and advanced seamstresses, they are going to do it there way because they know how.  One of the great advantages of .pdf patterns and indie designers is we can write patterns OUR way.  It also gives beginners the confidence and support to jump in and give it a shot. It is rather sad to see just how judgmental people can be at times towards beginners of even someone who doesn’t use heirloom techniques etc.   I’m not saying you should lie to someone who is already trying to sell stuff and not having luck and asking for advice, but to remember people have feelings, there is such a thing as tact and WE ALL START SOMEPLACE.

So today I am going to share a little about where I started.

I won’t lie crafting is in my blood.  By age 8 one grandmother had taught me to crochet and the other to knit.  Growing up I watched both my grandmothers and mother create.  When ever I had a chance to grab a ball of yard or a piece of fabric I snatched it right up.  I did do basics as a child including sewing rice bags and shorts as well as how to thread and use a sewing machine, sew by hand and bead.  My Grandmother relied on their sewing to sell at markets though so I didn’t really get to explore beyond that.

When I was 18 my ex husband got me a brand new Singer sewing machine… I made one not so square quilt and a Harry Potter cloak before I killed it.  On that note I do not recommend newer plastic Singers, I have killed 3 in less then 5 years, the vintage ones are awesome though!  A few years later he got me a basic Bernina Bernette (that I used up until last May and is now my spare and sews perfectly).  After I had my oldest son I started sewing the occasional baby pouch sling but it wasn’t until 6.5 years ago after the twins were born that I finally really started to sew.  I tried my first tissue paper pattern ever… it turned out cute but WAY to big, lol. I also started exploring with creating my own patterns with out a pattern.  This is the first real pattern I drafted 100% and has quite the story behind it.  This was back when e-book/.pdf patterns were very new and a few of my friends suggested I make it a pattern for sale because at the time there were not other round neck dress patterns unless you looked at vintage tissue patterns.  I posted to a forum asking what the ladies thought while many were very excited one wasn’t so much and had some very discouraging comments about how it was nothing special and you could get lots of tissue patterns for .25 at the thrift shop, so I decided to pass.

Well 2 months later guess what she released in her pattern shop for $7.95?  Yep, a nearly identical dress that was a HUGE hit at the time and made her a lot of money.  To be honest that experience discouraged me for a long time.  BUT obviously I finally over came that last year and I look at the time I waited as the time I used to expand my skills.  I will be honest I had good skills and people would have liked it but I didn’t have the types of skills I needed to really produce quality patterns.  Two of a kind dresses 🙂

One of the things I wanted to talk about is that we all start somewhere!  This red dot version may have nicely turned and pressed curves but if you look at the top stitching on the yoke, while not bad, it’s also not quite straight either.  Then there is there is the muslin version I did first… My first drafted pattern! Mini Boden style retro baby dress!

The yoke curves aren’t turned as nicely, they aren’t pointy but they aren’t nice and round either and my button holes aren’t quite even.  Even now 6 years latter guess what… I still have stuff that just doesn’t turn out!  But I everyone has to start somewhere!  So don’t get discouraged, set mini goals that matter to YOU.

The more you sew the better you will get.  You know what?  I ENJOY gathering by hand, sewing button holes and doing a proper finished hem.  Yep your read that right… I like doing those things!  I enjoy the challenge, knowing I can do it and seeing just how far I have come.

I sew because I enjoy it, I love fabric and I love creating.  The look of pure joy on my 5 kids faces when they see something I made is enough to keep me happy no matter what other people thing!  Next thing you know you will be looking at stuff and thinking, wow, did I really do that?  Being able to see something we love, but cant justify the cost, and being able to go home and make something inspired by it is amazing.  I can’t tell you the joy I felt when I got asked in the store if I bought or made a very adorable set of Gymboree dresses… just the THOUGHT they that thought I was capable of that after seeing other stuff I had made left me in a daze.

When I am sharing with ladies new to sewing I often see their eye’s glaze over and the thought ‘wow, I could never do that’ going through head but guess what?  We all start somewhere ;).

One of my new guilty little pleasures ;) Jammicures!

One of my new guilty little pleasures is Jamberry nail wraps. This is my newest set I am IN LOVE!!!! I love the look of them on even more then when I original ordered them and they don’t chip like polish when I am sewing.

With 5 kids, the never ending cleaning of my house and my sewing business most polish doesn’t last more then a few days.  While I love going in and getting a gel manicure I don’t have the time or the money to do it often, and acrylics are pricey and also tear up your nails.  A set of wraps runs $15 and you can get about 2 mani’s & 2 pedi’s out of it which is the cost of a polish mani in the salon. Plus they even have kids ones including mommy & me sets for those of you it girls ;).

Jamberry nail wraps are the perfect solution!  I know many of my nurse friends have similar issues with polish. They are easy to remove (quick soak and pull off) with out damaging your nails.

To classic solids and French tips. The French tips look perfect but are easy to do at home and not harmful to your nails like acrylics AND don’t chip right away like polish.  They are a great professional option.

I will be honest I have NO CLUE if it is truly ‘a day’, but for us crafters it might as well be!  The sale itself won’t go live until 6am PST I believe, so they haven’t announced anything about what is included, but this is the teaser they have up…

If you have a larger, smaller or simply harder to fit bust then the average women, this class, “Adjust the Bust” with Kathleen Cheetham, is extremely helpful!  It covers both FBA (Full Bust Adjustment) and SBA (Small Bust Adjustment).  She explains it well, explains the math and why and how it needs adjusted where.  This is one of my favorite sewing classes I have purchased.

Is your chest not your hard to fit part?  There is also a “Back, Neck & Shoulders” and “Waist & Hips” class too.  All 3 fitting classes are on sale for $29.99 for today only.

One other class I have started recently is the “Sewing Designer Jeans”.  I am excited to try this out and love that I can watch the classes just a little at a time, at my own pace.  It makes the idea of making my own jeans a LOT less intimidating.

Another class that some of my amazing fans have recommended is the “Beginner Serging” class.  If you haven’t used one before, and don’t have friends or family with one they can be very intimidating.  The feed back I got about this class is it is a great way to but the fear a side and pull that serger out of the closet (seems pretty common, lol) and start falling in love with it!  Since different sergers/overlockers work differently you will want to make sure you have your manual.  At $29.99 it is cheaper then most in shop classes and you can watch it as many times as you want forever!

Princess Seam Full Bust Adjustment (FBA) Tutorial

Earlier this year I got a chance to help out Hayley of Mouse House Creations with her Ladies Caroline Dress.  Hayley herself is petite with average proportions.  So when her testers with larger busts were having fit issues I knew what the problem was and offered to make up a tutorial for a full bust adjustment.  Today I am going to share the same FBA tutorial with you!  Proper sizing/fit is key to a stunning finished garment, as someone with a cup size WAY past DD (try 34H/I) I can attest to what a huge difference a proper FBA can make.

Princess Seam Full Bust Adjustment

(FBA) Tutorial

Start by measuring over your bust down under your arms and back up and over your bust on the other side.  Then measure across the fullest part of your bust like normal.  If your over bust measurement is 2″+ smaller than your bust measurement, pick your bodice size based on your over bust for the bust/chest measurement and then do an FBA. The reason for this is simply adjusting a larger size down will alter the lines, shape and fit.

 

Pieces as is.

Mark bust point on both pieces. With seam allowance a size 12/14 is about 11″ down from the highest shoulder point and you want the mark 1/2″ from the edge of the side.

Match up your pieces like sewn, but transfer your bust point mark over, placing it also 1/2″ from the edge.

Now, draw a line down 1/2″ along the edge of your princess from the seam. Then, draw a straight line from bust point to the middle of the arm opening and another from bust to the side seam about 2″ down from the point where the side seam & arm holes meet.

 

Next, make 2 cuts with the first starting at the side seam and stopping about 1/16″ from the bust point. Then, starting from the bottom edge go up through the bust point, stopping 1/16″ from busting through the arm seam. You should now have 1 pivot point at the arm, and one at the bust.

Now, you want to take your bust/over bust and that is how much room we need to add. Mine is 4″. Since there are 2 side panels that means I need to add 2″ per side. **NOTE** Some tops have more ease in them and you may not need to add the full 2″.  This one does not, so I need to add the full amount**

At the bust point, use a ruler to add the amount needed and tape from the bust point pivot to the small 1/2″ strip keeping that the full width needed.

Next, you will want to cut your long skinny section into a few pieces and spread them out as shown here. I did NOT need 4″ added to the waist so I tapered it in. This added only 1″ total to the waist instead. Make sure to keep the fullness closer to the bust point.

Tape in place, filling the entire vertical gap from the arm to the waist seam. You can fill with scrap paper or clear packing tape.

Draw a line connecting the 2 halves of the original bust point mark and continue to the edge of the paper.

Cut along that mark and close and tape the original line to the side seam.  Fill your new gap with tape/paper.

With a soft flexible measuring tape, measure from the top point of the princess seam on your new piece to the waist. Repeat with the original front center piece. For mine, there was a 3″ difference.

Then, cut across your center piece at the bust point and again about 1.5″ from the bottom. Since I need to add 3″ I then add 1.5″ to each gap lengthening the center panel 3″ to accommodate for the bust.

 

Your new pieces are finished. Cut and sew as normal.
